There seems to be a general consensus between the experts which identifies and alerts us to the behaviour & personality traits of people who are inclined to harm others , even if there isn’t agreement about a ‘cure’, or if there is such a thing .
In a domestic setting it’s no surprise that the safest and most effective form of protection, is firstly to recognise toxic behaviour, and then if possible, keep ‘harmers’ out of your life .
Robert Louis Stevenson wrote in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde – “I learned to recognise the thorough and primitive duality of man; I saw that, of the two natures that contended in the field of my consciousness, even if I could rightly be said to be either, it was only because I was radically both.”
Aleksander Solzhenitsyn wrote, in The Gulag Archipelago, “Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, not between classes, not between political parties either – but right through every human heart – and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us , it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains…..an unuprooted small corner of evil…. It is impossible to expel evil from the world in its entirety, but it is possible to constrict it within each person .
So we have to decide, which of those duel natures we choose to cultivate and feed.
