Portraits

Portraiture comes in infinite forms and is no longer a mark of status, but a way of exploring another person’s life.

Seeing yourself in a good portrait can be uncomfortable, and revealing. It should capture the physical appearance, and distil the inner truth of a person.

In a self-portrait, the artist can simply be in need of a model so with the use of a mirror the problem is solved. They may however be searching for a thread, exploring an event, the ageing process, identity, clothing, or other people in their lives.

A portrait at its best can hold us in time, offer an insight into the sitter’s life, perhaps capture their surroundings, tell us something about their frame of mind and ours, all at the same time.
