Mothers weep, Chechnya. 1996. oil on board. 46 x 61 cm

The war in Yugoslavia is the subject of this work. The young woman
carries a basket of fish on her head, souls gathered to sustain
others, at her waist are some of those sons and fathers lost in the
war. The repeat figure of a woman weeping expresses this repetition
of experience for so many Mothers, Children and Wives.

Children looking at a naked chicken. 2006. oil on card. 25 x 33 cm.

This painting is about the progress and cost of science . The
invention of a bald or featherless chicken was in an article about
making convenience food more convenient to the farmer and consumer.
Zoe says I wanted to have the children participating in a small
ceremony of some kind, a mock wedding, at school, mimicking adult
behaviour, then I wanted the chicken to pass by, lost and naked. We
dont seem to see what we have in life and how fragile and valuable
it is.
